In the U.K. it was voted that the most sizzling TV romance was between Rachel Ward and Richard Chamberlain, aka Meggie Cleary and Father Ralph, in 1980's mini-series "The Thorn Birds."

Bonnie has kindly donated an original TV Guide magazine to raise maintenance funds for the Richard Chamberlain Online website. The magazine is from 1963 (the week of March 16-22) with Richard on the front cover and a four-page story on him inside. September 2003

"" was released on DVD Region 1 (U.S.A. & Canada) on September, 23 2003. You can buy a copy from Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.
DVD Features: Complete miniseries on five discs with remastered sound, "The Making Of Shogun" a 13-segment documentary, 3 historical perspective featurettes, commentary by director Jerry London on selected scenes, and more.
The miniseries itself, which ran 12 hours with commercials, is nine hours without, and is presented as four episodes across four discs. The fifth disc is an excellent collection of bonus features, including an 80-minute presentation on the making of the film that includes interviews with Richard Chamberlain, director Jerry London and others.
The story of the making of "Shogun" is at times more exciting than the miniseries, which followed English navigator John Blackthorne (played by Richard Chamberlain), who gets tangled in the politics and culture of Japan at the turn of the 17th century.
The miniseries took some bold steps to convey Blackthorne's situation, among them not letting the audience understand the Japanese dialogue any better than Blackthorne did. That carries over to the DVD, which comes with English subtitles but does not subtitle the Japanese dialogue in the early going.
The making-of material makes clear that the American filmmakers ran into language and cultural problems of their own while shooting in Japan. The clash of cultures is quite interesting, although there are times when I would have liked to have heard what the Japanese crew thought as well.
The limitations of the Japanese production facilities also go some way toward explaining some of the tackier scenes in the film itself, including an opening shipwreck that is quite hokey. Of course, it may also look bad because we've become accustomed to better effects on TV in the ensuing decades.

Richard Chamberlain will be signing copies of the new DVD boxset of "Shogun" at the Los Angeles Virgin Megastore, located at 8000 Sunset Blvd, on September 23 at 7:00pm. He will also be signing copies of his new book, Shattered Love: A Memoir.

Richard Chamberlain will be taking part in the Celebrity Power Walk, which will be benefiting the American Cancer Society, on Saturday, September 13, 2003 at 7:30am-8:30am as part of the LifeFest Maui at Wailea, September 12-14, 2003, Hawaii’s premier health and wellness event. The walk begins and ends at The Shops at Wailea.

There was a rare appearance of Richard Chamberlain in a U.K. magazine this weekend.
Playing it straight: How Hollywood favourite Richard Chamberlain broke a million female hearts
Very brief abstracts: "No one will ever look as good in a cassock as Richard Chamberlain. Maybe it is the lean figure, or the beatific smile, but he somehow seems built for ecclesiastical garments. So it is a thrill when he greets me, if not in a cassock, then at least in a robe - a white towelling gown...", "If I kick the bucket, Martin will have to sell our home in Hawaii to pay the duties."

Hollywood mourns demise of Katharine Hepburn
Tuesday, July 01, 2003

Hollywood on Monday mourned the death of Katharine Hepburn, the screen legend who ironically went out of her way to shun Tinseltown's spotlight throughout her 60-year career.
Actor Richard Chamberlain, who co-starred with Hepburn in 1969's "The Madwoman Of Chaillot," said she was a unique personality with a biting sense of humor." "She was one of the last great personalities that our culture created some time ago," he said on CNN's Larry King Live. "I don't think our society creates those people any more. There was something so huge about her."

According to the tabloids (so it must be true! ) "Macho Mel Lashes Back At Richard Chamberlain." Allegedly Mel Gibson is furious that in an interview, Richard made a crack that Mel thinks was a sly insinuation he might be gay. Mel fired off a letter blasting Richard for dragging his good name into "your sordid life" and warned him never to use his name again!
Having listened to the interview myself, as usual the tabloids have taken out of context what was said and what Richard was referring to. I took it that Richard was saying that most people do not know the 'real' Mel Gibson as a person (i.e. like Mel's friends and family know him) compared to the 'actor' Mel Gibson (i.e. the way the viewing public know Mel from the characters he portrays onscreen).

Richard Chamberlain returns to the Berkshire Theatre Festival for the season's second production, the American premiere of acclaimed Canadian novelist and playwright Timothy Findley's The Stillborn Lover. The play opens July 8 and runs until July 26 and will be directed by Martin Rabbett. See the Theatre section for more details.

The play is set in 1972 Canada where Harry Raymond, a career diplomat and the ambassador to Russia, has been recalled to a safe house under suspicion of murdering a young male prostitute in Moscow. His wife Marian is sinking into Alzheimer's, his best friend is betraying him and his daughter is confused about who her real father is underneath all his impervious, uptight, pin-striped restraint. Perched on the far edge of denial, Harry is confronting the painful reality of his stillborn life. Martin Rabbett directs this tense, literate mystery, a superb drama and an unforgettable and forbidden tale of love.

Shogun

The Hallmark Channel will air a digitally remastered broadcast of "Shogun" starting July 13 through to July 19, at 9:00 PM ET.
James Clavell’s "Shogun," starring Richard Chamberlain, the six-part epic mini-series based on his best-selling novel, is a fascinating blend of politics, romance, history, culture, religion, and high adventure.
The story centers around John Blackthorne (Chamberlain), a shipwrecked English navigator who becomes a samurai in the mysterious - and often terrifying - world of Japan at the start of the 17th century.
It's also a classic romantic tragedy about Blackthorne's forbidden love affair with the beautiful wife of a samurai lord; a complex tale of political intrigue in feudal Japan; and the dramatic clash of cultures as seen through the eyes of a European Renaissance man "civilized" by his exposure to the Japanese way of life.

Unless new funding can be found the film "The Final Verdict" looks set not to be made.

May 2003

Richard has now gone public about his homosexuality.

Dr Kildare star: I'm Gay
Friday 30 May, 2003

Richard Chamberlain, most famous for playing the role of Doctor Kildare in the 1960s, has talked to US television network NBC about being gay. His "Dateline" interview is being timed with the release of his autobiography, "Shattered Love: A Memoir." Richard also talks a little about his love life, alluding to his partner, Martin. "I just am more thankful for Martin's - this is gonna get me - love than anything else in my life," he says. The book talks about his experiences of being gay and closeted, and his belief that coming out at the height of his popularity would have been "career suicide."
In the interview, he told how growing up being homosexual or a "sissy" was socially unacceptable. "I disliked and feared this part of myself intensely and had to hide it and became 'Perfect Richard, All American Boy' as a place to hide. I'm not a romantic leading man any more so I don't need to nurture that public image." "I love my life just the way it is. I'm proud of my relationship. I'm actually proud of myself," he said.

April 2003

The publisher's of Richard's autobiography are doing some last minute photo research for the book.

The film "The Final Verdict" looks set not to be made at all unless new funding can be found.

"The Thorn Birds" 20th Anniversary Edition DVD Box Sets that have been seen around are a batch of bare-bones, feature-only screener copies that were made up for the promotion of the recent airings of the series by the Hallmark TV channel. The miniseries is not currently on the schedule for DVD release. However, Warner Brothers does have the title in their sights and wants to get it into stores sooner rather than later.

Due to the schedule for the filming of "The Final Witness" being put back six months, Richard may not now be involved with this project.

Due to the cancellation of "The Thorn Birds" 20th Anniversary party in Los Angeles Richard was instead in New York to promote the re-release, but Rachel Ward remained at home Down Under in Australia. Richard appeared on the TV talk show The View! (see below).

Richard was his charming self but the ladies interviewing him gave him little opportunity to speak. They had advertised his spot as talking about the DVD set but the only thing that was mentioned about it was that the audience participants were all receiving a copy. The discussion focused around two shots in the film and the co-stars in it. Rachel Ward and the Matlock Island bed scene and Richard's nude scene. There was also a discussion about the actress that played Mary and Richard's experiences with the two women.
They also wished him a happy birthday and spoke about how young he looked, and he announced that he was 69.
Richard continues to live in the Oahu home he bought 26 years ago "when it was very affordable," he laughs. He's winding his autobiograpy for Regan Books, and will head back to the stage at the Berkshire Theatre Festival this summer in "The Stillborn Lover" by Timothy Findley.

March 2003

U.S.A. visitors will finally be able to see Richard's film "River Made To Drown In" when it is released on June 24, 2003 on both DVD and Video.

An interview with Richard Chamberlain on the TV talk show The View! (ABC) on Thursday, March 27 was preempted by news coverage of the war in Iraq. It is now scheduled to be shown on Monday March 31.

A reunion in Los Angeles was called off for "The Thorn Birds" cast due to the Iraq war. "The Thorn Birds" 20th Anniversary party, which the Hallmark Channel planned to throw in advance of re-airing the famous 1983 miniseries was cancelled at the last minute. Richard Chamberlain had flown in from Hawaii for the event and was sorry not to have seen Rachel Ward. They'd not seen one another since the filming 20 years ago. But while in Los Angeles he taped the intro for the mini-series segment on ABC's 50th anniversary show to air in May.

The Hallmark Channel and HallmarkChannel.com announce their 20th Anniversary Thorn Birds event. The event is made up of two key features. First, a digitally remastered broadcast of "The Thorn Birds" will be airing starting March 30. Also, at HallmarkChannel.com there is a Thorn Birds trivia contest/sweepstakes where players can test their knowledge of the Thorn Birds and win a walk-on role in an upcoming Hallmark Channel TV production. Further details, showtimes, and the contest can be found on Hallmark's site at www.hallmarkchannel.com.

February 2003

Richard Chamberlain will return to the Berkshire Theatre this summer in the American premiere of "The Stillborn Lover" by the late Canadian playwright and novelist Timothy Findley. Timothy was thrilled that Richard had agreed to do his play.

The play is set in 1972 Canada and Richard plays the part of a Harry Raymond, a career diplomat and the ambassador to Russia, who has been recalled to a safe house under suspicion of murdering a young male prostitute in Moscow. His wife Marian is sinking into Alzheimer’s, his best friend is betraying him and his daughter is confused about who her real father is underneath all his impervious, uptight, pin-striped restraint. Perched on the far edge of denial, Harry is confronting the painful reality of his stillborn life.

The play opens July 8 and runs until July 26 and will be directed by Martin Rabbett.

The Theatre can be contacted by:
Mail: BTF, PO Box 797, Stockbridge, MA 01262
